Important modernization initiatives will transform the Saronno Malpensa railway into the main means infraofaccessing the region of Piedmont from the new Milanese airport.
The line Saronno-Malpensa plays a very important role in the network infrastructure of the north area of Milan, not only for the transport of goods, but also for passengers. In fact, after the activation of the connection to the airport of Malpensa, this is has acquired new importance, as to be considered the gateway to the Piedmont region.
The project involved the construction from scratch of a portion of the railtrack and all related services as the new station Vanzaghello- Magnago, the doubling of the tracks is in Busto-Vanzaghello and new installations of electric traction, signaling and telecommunications. Simultaneously all road infrastructure has been reorganized in the area interested by the railroad. With this purpose all interferences between railway operations and road traffic have been eliminated, all level crossings have been suppressed, underpasses replaced with vehicular and pedestrian, consequently affecting, also the adaptation of the adjacent roads.
