RESTORATION Of THE WALLS
A systematic plan of restoration work for the façades and wall paintings of one of Milan’s most important Monuments.
The City Council has commenced the conservative restoration of the facades, wall paintings and the renovation of the roofs of the Corte Ducale of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan.
The work became necessary due to the intensive use of the monument by the city’s inhabitants and tourists, and also in view of the upcoming international exhibitions to be held in the city.
The project aims to preserve the material characteristics of the elements, saving and enhancing the castle’s historical and artistic value. It thus entails the global restoration of the facades overlooking the castle’s courtyards. In order to protect the facades from seepage and rain damage, it was necessary to renovate the pitched roofs of the Corte Ducale, in addition to the reinforcement, cleaning and protection of the façades overlooking the courtyards with the exception of the Cortile della Fontana. Specifically, the work includes the filling and repair of gaps in the plaster, pre strengthening treatments with injections of liquid mortar, disinfection and extraction of salts, reinforcement with ethyl silicate, and cleaning of the terracotta surfaces.
The work on the roof of the Corte Ducale involves the removal of the tiles and the secondary framework, the laying of boarding for the application of a waterproof membrane, battens for ventilation, and the laying of new underlay, with partial reutilization of the existing clay barrel tiles, with pre-painted tile clips and accessories, and new guttering.
