NEW TRAINING AREAS AND ENERGY-SAVING TECHNOLOGIES
The Province of Milan’s new Polo Soderini, for professional training, is characterised by a sloping piazza open to the public that is planted with greenery and features two enormous white steel “sails” with solar panels.

The focus of the work is a structure dedicated to professional training owned by the Province of Milan. The project comprises the renovation of several buildings and the construction of new ones that will house the classrooms for professional training, along with a 1000-seat auditorium, exhibition areas and car parks.
The design that won the international competition is by the Milan architectural firm Dante Benini & Partners and deploys the existing buildings within a strong and coherent plan. The central feature of the design is a sloping piazza open to the public and planted with greenery, while a 30-metre-deep glass crater, covered by two enormous white steel “sails” with solar panels, allows access to the three underground floors.
The new buildings are characterised by the prevalent use of reinforced concrete, both cast on site and prefabricated, but also by metal structures, designed to give the project a distinctive architectural identity. Its strength lies in the use of materials and technologies capable of reducing pollution and saving and generating energy.
The design thus features systems for reducing energy consumption and a photovoltaic system. Additionally, it draws groundwater from the underlying aquifer for the heating and cooling of the rooms and for flush toilets and irrigation. These solutions were adopted in response to the recent regional regulations regarding the rational use of available resources.
