BETWEEN ANCIENT AND MODERN
A mixed residential and commercial building in the centre of Milan combines the restoration of the historic façade with a new glazed building.
The work involved creating a mixed commercial/residential building while rehabilitating a structure in the heart of Milan, near Corso Como. In keeping with the principles of the project, aimed at combining old and new, the plan called for demolition and reconstruction. The historic 19th-century façade in Viale Monte Grappa was maintained as the theatrical backdrop of the new project, while a large cornice powerfully marks the new architectural imprint of the complex, creating a seamless connection with the urban fabric. The line of the eaves, the slope of the roof and the apices of the new structure form a link with the varied and irregular buildings around it. From an expressive standpoint, the use of clear glass characterises the boundary between old and new. The work is completed by a covered public square, which is accessible from the street and serves as a hub animating the new buildings. The revisitation of apartments overlooking a courtyard, with
features typical of the Milanese version of this type of dwelling, has created a work in which numerous residential types become spatially decisive in terms of the composition, distribution and form of the entire complex.
