A RAPID, MODERN AND EFFICIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SERVICE FOR THE ADRIATIC RIVIERA
A high-priority project to serve a metropolitan area in which mobility is problematic, particularly during the periods associated with heavy tourist flows.
The project is the first important functional stage
in the Ravenna-Cattolica Rapid Coastal Transport System (RCT) that will cover the Adriatic Riviera and provide short and very short-range transport services, as envisaged in the programmes of Emilia-Romagna Region aimed at creating a rapid, modern and efficient public transport system for the Riviera. The central stretch, from Rimini to Riccione has been given top priority. Indeed, mobility is problematic in this area, particularly during the summer months, during which local transport is flanked by heavy tourist traffic. The existing road network is under growing pressure from the demand for transport, with progressively increasing congestion and pollution. The new transport system, which will run parallel to the Bologna-Ancona railway line, will help to redress the balance of transport and also improve local accessibility, laying the fundamental bases for the ignificant redistribution of traffic on the existing road network and, consequently, for a substantial improvement in urban and environmental quality. The project envisages the creation of a protected carriageway, equipped for the transit of restricted guided-drive vehicles with electric traction. The protected carriageway is 9.8 kilometres long and features two terminuses with roundabouts at the railway stations of Rimini and Riccione and 15 intermediate stops.
