RATIONALISATION OF THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION
A new road with the combined function of regional highway and supporting infrastructure for the urban
network.

The project envisages the construction of a direct connection between “Briantea” State Highway 342 and “Varesina” State Highway 233 in the south- north direction, in the Olona River Valley, thus expanding the road system along the axis of the A8 motorway, Pedemontana motorway (planned) and the Swiss border crossings at Ponte Tresa and Gaggiolo. Currently the connections are supported by the urban street system (Via Peschiera, Via Vanetti, Viale Valganna). The purpose of the project, the first part of which has already been completed, is to build a new road that, in keeping with the urban and regional planning policies, is able to offer the combined function of regional highway and supporting infrastructure for the urban network. Additionally, this road must ensure a high level of mobility while being as attentive as possible to environmental preservation by rationalising the existing infrastructures. The new highway thus not only allows transit, but also aids distribution and penetration. The working project of the infrastructure, designed by Italiana Costruzioni with the other companies belonging to ATI, was developed on the basis of the final project submitted to the tender called by the Province of Varese. The working project paid particular attention to the problems associated with the environmental integration of the works in the region and interference between the road and the urbanised areas that it crosses.
