SURGERIES AND SERVICES FOR ROME’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
A complex of three buildings to house surgeries, services and laboratories in an area adjoining the site of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.
The project is under construction on a site next to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome and consists of a complex of buildings that
will house the clinic of the Bambino Gesù childrenʼs hospital. The complex consists of three buildings and outdoor areas with pedestrian links between them. The three buildings house different functions: the specialist clinic, the office building and the laboratory building. The project also envisages a service bay allowing the loading and unloading of goods and access to the underground car park levels. The clinic building has three storeys: an underground one to be used as a car park and two above ground, with a total height of 9.45 metres. The ground floor houses the entrance hall, public services (waiting room, cash desks for payment of medical fees, public relations office, play area, etc.) rooms for private medical consultations, blood sample area and imaging diagnostics. The first floor is home to more complex medical activities: outpatient surgery, day hospital area, physiotherapy clinic, orthodontic surgery and cytogenetic clinic. The central area is dedicated to public services, with waiting rooms, a play area and a canteen. This floor also has an entrance on the south-east façade that opens onto the external portico overlooked by the bar and the bank. The office building has five storeys: a basement and four above ground, with a total height of 17.33 metres. The building is accessed via a covered portico that is also linked to the entrance of the clinic. The floor with the main entrance houses a large conference room open to the public with an independent entrance, while the upper and basement floors, where the various office areas and associated spaces are located, are accessed via a wide spiral staircase in the main entrance area. The top floor houses the staff meeting room and opens onto the service terrace on the south- east side. The laboratory building has two storeys, including a basement for staff parking, and a sloping roof. The floor occupied by the laboratories is divided into three zones: the central area around the entrance hall, where the stairs and lifts are located together with offices, staff rooms and large meeting rooms, and the sides housing the two laboratory sections with the working areas and associated services.
